The Quantocks – Sat 15th Aug 2009

It’s Friday afternoon and the sun has come out! All packed and ready to go, have even found some good local pubs to check out. Will let you know how we get on.

A lovely weekend, thanks to the great company. Despite mislaying one member (sorry Richard!) along the route we had a great ride on Saturday taking in the variety of landscape types in the Quantock Hills. The campsite was conveniently placed at the base of the hills so there was no ferrying of cars needed. A handy meeting place proved to be the Blue Ball pub where our solitary walker reserved a splendid table in the garden – welcome after a few steep climbs and muddy tracks – though the impossible hill back out proved a bit too much for us! Sunday was spent walking along the coast path with a picnic on the beach, a geological wonder at this point of the coast, and following the steps of Coleridge and Wordsworth who were inspired by the landscape here. Particular thanks to John for his intellectual input and suggestion to go to Coleridge’s house where we found the poet himself in residence!!!
