Salisbury YHA is a great base for a winter weekend trip. The youth hostel is really comfortable with an annexe you might get exclusive use of if the hostel is quiet. Less than 2 hours from Brighton makes for easy travelling for short winter daylight, and only 5 minutes walk into the centre of the city is great for pubs and restaurants if you don’t want to use the excellent self-catering facilities at the hostel.
On this trip there was a group of walkers, and, for a change, a group of us with road bikes – 48 miles on the Saturday, and a hillier 38 on the Sunday. (Not too long, but then we haven’t been out much over the winter and we had to keep stopping to eat in cosy country pubs, obviously, to ward off the cold…).
There were also a couple of people taking advantage of great routes for their training runs for marathon preparations – reporting back that there were some good options for mountain bike trail rides.
