Hi, so you’ve had a look about and decided that you’d like to join BEC. Excellent. What’s next then?

Have any questions before you join or just after signing-up? We run an introduction and question and answer video call (on Zoom) on the second Wednesday each month at 8:30pm. Email us at if you’d like to attend or directly with questions.

NB. All BEC events & activities, are only for members, and so you need to join before you can attend. We only accept members over the age of 18

Please ensure that you enter all the personal details required (those marked by a star) including your Next of Kin details. This is a requirement of your membership and you will not be able to use the website until you’ve completed all the boxes. If it’s still prompting you to fill in the boxes next time you login then there will be 1 field marked with a *, somewhere that has been missed! Please do shout if you are struggling with this! Also, if you can use your full name in the ‘display name publically as’ field then that will help people to know who’s signed up for trips & events!

Standard annual membership fees are as follows :

Membership expires after 1 Year.
Young Person £30.90 now.
Membership expires after 1 Year.
Full Time Student £20.60 now.
Membership expires after 1 Year.
Low Income and Unwaged £20.60 now.
Membership expires after 1 Year.
Distant Member £20.60 now.
Membership expires after 1 Year.


A Distant Member is one that lives outside East or West Sussex.
Student membership is only available for Full time students with a valid NUS card.
Low Income or Unwaged membership is only available for people who are unwaged or on a low income (below National Living Wage of £8.25 an hour) on date of joining. Proof may be requested.
A young member is a person who is under 30 at the time of joining.

Membership Benefits

There are a number of benefits of being a BEC Member, least of all is taking part in the many and varied activities.

The Club has a Third Party Insurance policy. Any member taking part in an official club sponsored and arranged event will be covered against claims from third parties.

The Club has arranged discounts at many local outdoor shops and other local businesses. See the full BEC Discount List for more details.

The Club is a member of the YHA and has a Group Membership card. This is available for use of club members on trips. Group size must be six or more. Please email the secretary for information on how to use this.

The Club has a large quantity of equipment for the activities we take part in.

– Canoes, Windsurfers, Surfboards, along with helmets, spraydecks, cagoules and buoyancy aids.
– Climbing ropes, helmets, harnesses, full racks of gear.
– Ice axes and crampons
– Caving gear – lights, helmets, oversuits.
– OS and other maps and guides for key walking/scrambling/climbing areas.
– Two person tents.

This equipment is available for Club Members to use free of charge for club trips and events, and also for use for private use, always subject to a ‘you lose or damage it, you replace it’ agreement. Please contact section leaders for more information.
